Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on Wednesday called the U.S. decision to revoke the visa of Brazil's ambassador to Washington, Maria Luiza Ribeiro Viotti, an irresponsible and thoughtless act. The Trump administration announced the revocation on Tuesday, citing Brazil's delay in granting diplomatic approval to the U.S. nominee for ambassador to Brazil. Brazil rejected the claim as false.
"He [Trump] then took the attitude of revoking our ambassador's visa. If she leaves [the U.S.] and comes here, she will have to get a visa again. An irresponsible, thoughtless attitude for a country with 203 years of diplomacy, of diplomatic relations.
Unnecessary, Lula said during a joint interview with Meteoro Brasil and the podcast Os Três Elementos. "The U.S. doesn't give importance to an ambassador in Brazil. It's been a year and a half since he [Trump] has been in power and he hasn't sent one here.
Then he tried to send one and thinks we have an obligation to do it on their timeline. That's not right, not possible. We want to be treated with respect, he added. Lula also reiterated that Brazil will not accept any foreign interference in October's elections.
