U.s. Delivered Mixed Results for Progressives and Centrists Battling for Control of the Democratic Party, With No Single Ideological Winner

Shri Thanedar, and in Kansas, Cindy Holscher won the gubernatorial primary over a moderate backed by the sitting governor. But establishment Democrats scored wins too: Jocelyn Benson easily took Michigan's gubernatorial primary, Jeremy Moss beat a progressive in a House district, and Rep. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez of Washington fended off a progressive challenge.

In Virginia, moderate Elaine Luria won a swing-seat primary, while Kansas pastor Adam Hamilton will face Republican Sen. Roger Marshall in November. A Michigan swing district saw two moderates split votes, allowing lefty activist William Lawrence to win with a plurality. Cori Bush lost her comeback bid by 22 points to the AIPAC-backed candidate who ousted her in 2024. The fight continues Tuesday in Wisconsin, where polls show democratic socialist Francesca Hong leading the gubernatorial primary, though her past stances on abolishing police and canceling Thanksgiving may hurt her.
