Apple Challenges UK Order for Encrypted Data Access

The tech giant did not disclose the specifics to BBC News, but the Financial Times reported it is another challenge to a Home Office demand for "backdoor" access to highly encrypted Apple user data. The row, centered on the government's desire to access material protected by an advanced data protection system that even Apple cannot currently see, has simmered since early 2025. The government declined to comment on legal proceedings or "operational matters, but stated: "The UK supports strong encryption and robust privacy protections, but it is also vital that law enforcement can access communications when necessary and proportionate to protect the public from terrorism, serious crime, and child sexual abuse. Apple pointed reporters to a statement from last year, after its initial challenge, saying it was "gravely disappointed" it still could not offer its Advanced Data Protection feature to new UK users, following its withdrawal in February 2025.
