Edwardian House at No 5 Cwmdonkin Drive in the Uplands Is Where Thomas Was Born and Lived for 20 Years

The semi-detached Edwardian house at No 5 Cwmdonkin Drive, in The Uplands suburb, is where Thomas was born on 27 October 1914 and lived for 20 years. Owner Geoff Haden, a lifelong Uplander and former structural engineer, restored the property from a student boarding house in 2003 and opened it to overnight guests in 2008. Overnight stays start at £144 ($191) for up to seven people, while self-guided tours cost £9 ($12). Guests can explore every room, including the parlour referenced in A Child's Christmas in Wales, and see framed notes, such as one Thomas wrote to his first girlfriend, Pamela Hansford Johnson.
Recent visitors include Johnny Depp, Lord David Owen, and singer Cerys Matthews, plus Swifties after Taylor Swift referenced Thomas in her 2024 album. The house features restored Edwardian furnishings and items from the Thomas family, with no rooms off-limits.
