Turkish Mayor Arrested in Corruption Probe Over Building Permits
An investigation led by the İzmir Chief Public Prosecutor's Office uncovered organized offenses including bribery, extortion, forgery of official documents, abuse of office, and zoning violations tied to building permits and construction licenses.
Prosecutors issued arrest warrants for 16 suspects after expert reports and field and digital examinations. In simultaneous raids on Monday in Menderes, Karabağlar, and Konak districts, gendarmerie teams detained Mayor İlkay Çiçek, Deputy Mayor M.T., zoning director İ.Y., project director D.P., building control director Ö.Y., former acting project director Y.U., former acting building control director H.Y., council member E.P., staff Ö.C.K. and A.B.Y., İ.P., M.P., A.P., council member F.H., and former acting building control director S.D. R.S. was the last suspect still at large.
