A cargo ship has sunk in the South China Sea, off the coast of Vietnam. The authorities have now been able to rescue at least 39 people, 23 people are still missing. The ship ran into trouble at Fiery Cross Reef.

A Chinese rescue ship was the first to receive a distress signal, after which six other Chinese ships, a rescue helicopter and a Vietnamese ship began a rescue operation. Emergency services use satellite images to locate the missing. Ships in the area have also been asked to keep a close look out for victims.
