Buddhist Monastery Are Opposing a Proposed 1-Million-square-foot Data Center in Westlake, Citing Noise, Health, and Property Value Concerns

Gov. Greg Abbott has ordered audits of all pending data center grid connections. Maechee Sarah Hudson, a nun at the monastery, said the facility would disrupt their daily life.

Resident Kevin Myers voiced worries about noise, health impacts, and property values. Town officials say the project will boost revenue by 14 percent, generating $5 million annually for the first decade and $7 million thereafter, without raising taxes. They promise noise below 56 decibels during the day and 49 at night, a landscaped berm, a 75-foot buffer, and 500 additional trees.

Water usage would be capped at 54 million gallons annually. Opponents plan to continue their push against the development. This space offers me a space to reflect on what’s really important in life, Hudson said.

She noted that the daily routines of the sanctuary would face severe disruption because the facility would be visible and audible from the property. It would impact our daily way of life for sure.
