Schwartz, President Donald Trump's third pick to lead the agency, will become the first permanent CDC director since Susan Monarez, who was fired by US Health Secretary Robert F Kennedy Jr last year after less than a month over a vaccine policy clash. The first nominee, former Florida congressman David Weldon, was withdrawn by the White House in March 2025 just before his confirmation hearing.
