LIV Golf Secures Lead Investor to Replace Saudi Funding

LIV Golf has signed an agreement with an unnamed lead investor, approved by its board, to replace Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund as the league's primary backer.
The deal, expected to close in September, comes after the PIF said in April it would stop funding the league at the end of 2026, having invested a reported $5bn since 2022. LIV Golf cancelled its New Orleans event in June and reportedly nixed its season-ending team championship in Michigan, with at least one report suggesting the league considered Chapter 11 bankruptcy. LIV Golf CEO Scott O'Neil said the new agreement will "play a key role in supporting the path forward for the league's next era, driven by and for the players, adding that more than a dozen parties have shown interest as minority investors. He noted the player equity structure is "a first for a major global sports league, though no framework for player stakes was provided. LIV Golf returns to action this weekend with its New York tournament at Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, New Jersey, starting Thursday.
