Alexandra Burke Stars in a Sprawling Chaka Khan Jukebox Musical
At Troubadour Wembley Park theatre in London, Alexandra Burke stars as Chaka Khan in the jukebox musical I’m Every Woman, but the show squanders the superstar’s story in a sprawling, uneven production running nearly three hours.
The first half races through Khan’s Chicago girlhood, her father’s drug-related departure, her Black Panther involvement, and witnessing Fred Hampton’s murder, with celebrity impersonations of Joni Mitchell, Prince, Stevie Wonder, and Miles Davis. Burke delivers an energetic performance but lacks the vocal power to replicate Khan’s range, notably in Through the Fire, where three singers still fall short. Director Racky Plews’ staging is nimble, and Ashley Stroud shines as Khan’s sister Taka Boom.
The second half loses momentum, focusing on Khan’s charity work and independence efforts rather than her artistry, with an emotional reunion with her daughter failing to land. Runs until 27 September.
