63, the Last Living Suspect in the 1996 Killing of Rapper Tupac Shakur, Goes on Trial Aug. 10 in Las Vegas, Where a Jury Will Hear Evidence

Davis is charged with orchestrating the Sept. 7, 1996, attack that killed Shakur and wounded Death Row Records co-founder Marion "Suge" Knight; he has pleaded not guilty. Prosecutors allege the shooting was retaliation after a fight earlier that night at the MGM Grand involving Shakur, Knight, and Orlando "Baby Lane" Anderson, Davis' nephew, reflecting 1990s East Coast-West Coast rap rivalry and Bloods-Crips gang tensions.

Shakur, born Lesane Parish Crooks in New York in 1971, was riding in a black BMW driven by Knight when a white Cadillac pulled alongside near the Las Vegas Strip and opened fire; he died six days later at age 25. Knight, now 61, survived with graze wounds and is serving a 28-year prison sentence in California for a 2015 fatal hit-and-run. Anderson, long identified as the suspected gunman, was never charged and was killed in an unrelated 1998 Compton gang shooting. Davis' memoir says he handed a gun to the back seat but didn't identify the shooter; grand jury testimony from Denvonta Lee alleged Smith, also known as Big Dre, confessed to firing after taking the gun from Anderson, though Smith died of natural causes in 2004. Brown, allegedly the Cadillac's driver, was killed in a 2015 shooting at a Compton dispensary. Neither the Cadillac nor the gun has been recovered, leaving prosecutors to rely on witness testimony and Davis' statements.
