Turkish Festival Draws Record Crowd of Over 15,000 in Chicago Suburb

Halil Demir, head of the festival's Cultural Heritage Congress Committee, noted the festival's growth and its goal of introducing Turkish culture, history, and values to American society. Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson, in a video message, praised the Turkish-American community's contributions and declared August as Turkish Heritage Month. Abdulhadi Turus, head of the Presidency for Turks Abroad and Related Communities, also sent a video message highlighting the importance of such events.

Cenk Uygur, founder of The Young Turks, attended his first Turkish festival and expressed delight in joining the community. Academic panels and conferences drew strong interest, with scholars discussing Turkey's history, culture, education, and current issues. Food stalls featuring hand-rolled gözleme, wood-fired döner, baklava, and sand-brewed Turkish coffee saw long lines.

Folk dances, concerts, Karagöz-Hacivat shadow plays, dervish shows, children's activities, and hundreds of cultural booths also attracted large crowds. The first day alone drew about 10,000 visitors, with thousands more joining on the second day. The festival concluded with the announcement of "Türk Miras Ayı" (Turkish Heritage Month) celebrations.
