NASA's Punch Mission Has Dramatically Improved Solar Storm Forecasting, Predicting a Storm's Arrival Within Half an Hour During Initial

In March 2025, NASA launched the Polarimeter to Unify the Corona and Heliosphere (PUNCH) mission, a constellation of four microsatellites monitoring the sun 24/7. Using continuous imagery of a coronal mass ejection (CME) captured on May 31, 2025, scientists fed data into a computer model that analyzed the CME's edges, speed, and shape. After the first 12 hours of observation, the model predicted the solar storm would hit Earth eight hours later, accurate to within 30 minutes—far better than current methods with a five-hour error margin. Previously, instruments could track only one-fifth of a CME's journey; PUNCH tracks it fully, capturing images every four minutes.
"We thought PUNCH would be good at this, but it's a stunning result, said Craig DeForest, principal investigator at Southwest Research Institute in Boulder, Colorado. "To put it in perspective, this could be the space weather equivalent of going from a steam engine to a modern internal combustion engine. Solar storms can cause geomagnetic storms, leading to radio blackouts, power outages, satellite damage, and internet disruptions. The findings, presented as a proof of concept in a paper under review for the Space Weather journal, suggest that improved models and refined data could enable even earlier forecasts.
