The Cosmos, Priced Around $50,000, Was Originally Expected to Start Production This Year.
Lucid Motors' new CEO, Silvio Napoli, said the EV maker launched its first two vehicles before they were ready, and the company is now delaying its third model, the midsize Cosmos, to the second half of 2027. During an earnings call on Tuesday, Napoli said Lucid has disappointed on several fronts and for far too long, citing missed commitments, under-investment in service, and slow responses to quality issues.
Lucid has introduced new "quality gates" to ensure production and quality requirements are met before launch, though it declined to detail how they differ from previous processes. The delay gives rivals like Rivian, which began delivering its R2 in June, and Tesla, which brought the three-row Model Y L to the US, more time in the midsize electric SUV market. Lucid, backed by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, has lost money since it began producing cars and cut 12% of its workforce in February and another 18% in June.
The company said it has about $3 billion in total liquidity and strongly rejected bankruptcy rumors weeks ago. Napoli said, A deep transformation is in motion at Lucid.
